That means, as of this measurement, fewer than one in three Google searches sends the searcher anywhere at all. The other two are answered on the results page itself, and the businesses that would have received that traffic under the old model simply never see it, regardless of where they rank.
A decade of quiet redefinition, not one sudden change
The shift from 45 percent to 68 percent zero-click did not happen in a single update. It tracks a sequence of specific, dated changes to how Google's results page itself works, each one answering more of the query directly rather than pointing outward. Direct answers and featured snippets began pulling factual queries out of the ten-blue-links model years before generative AI entered the picture. Local pack results answered "near me" queries without a click to any individual business website. Knowledge panels answered entity questions, who is this person, what is this company, without sending traffic to the entity's own site.
Each of these was, in isolation, a modest change to a small share of query types. Compounded across a decade and across an enormous share of total query volume, they produced the 23-point structural shift documented above. This is why "ranking number one" in 2013 and "ranking number one" in 2026 are not the same achievement: the page around that ranking has been quietly rebuilt to need the click less each year.
AI Overviews accelerated a trend that was already a decade old
Generative AI summaries did not start the zero-click trend, they joined a trend already 23 points into its climb. But they accelerated it sharply.
