Search Surface Optimization
Get found when the answer is written by an AI.
Your buyers have stopped scrolling through ten blue links. They ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, and the engine reads the web for them, then hands back a short, confident answer with a few businesses named in it. You are either in that answer or you are invisible. Search Surface Optimization is the coordinated work that gets you found, read, trusted and named, across classic search and every AI answer.
A technical specialist directs and reviews every engagement. We commit to method and measurement, never to a guaranteed ranking.
What changed
The old search handed a buyer a page of links and let them choose. The new search reads the whole web for them and hands back a short answer with a few names already in it. Getting into that answer is a different job from ranking a page, and most businesses are still built for the old one. An AI now assembles the shortlist. It can only include what it can read.
What it takes to be named
Four pillars the engines judge you on
Being named in an answer is not one trick. It is four things holding together at once, and it is exactly what the Machine-Readiness Score measures.
Visibility
Whether the engines can find you at all: across classic search, the local map, and by name inside ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot.
Legibility
Whether a machine can read what you are, who you serve, and what you offer, through clean structure, schema, and an entity it can resolve to you and no one else.
Credibility
Whether the engines can verify you are real and reliable: the reviews, ratings, and consistent facts that decide who gets named once the shortlist is drawn.
Actionability
Whether a machine can act on you once it finds you: cite you, quote your hours and services, book you, or hand you a buyer who is ready to move.
How it works
Measure, build, hold
The same method runs at every scale. It starts with a number, moves all four pillars together, then defends the position as the engines shift.
- 01
Measure
We run your Machine-Readiness Score: a dated read across the four pillars, plus a sample of how the AI engines actually answer for your kind of business and what share of those answers name you. You start from a number, not a hunch.
- 02
Build
The Foundation Sprint: the coordinated four-pillar work that moves the whole score at once. Technical foundation, legibility, credibility and the answer-first content the engines quote, sequenced so the pieces reinforce each other rather than fighting for attention one at a time.
- 03
Hold
The engines change their behaviour constantly, so a one-time fix decays. The Visibility Retainer re-measures your score on a cadence, defends the position you gained, and keeps compounding it as the surfaces shift.
What we build and fix
The levers that move the score
Technical foundation & legibility
- Core Web Vitals, crawlability and indexing so every engine can reach your pages
- Structured data and schema that state, in machine terms, exactly what you are
- A resolved brand entity and knowledge graph, so an engine knows it is you
Answer-first content
- Pages written to be quoted, not just ranked, answering the question first
- The real questions your market asks, mapped to the intent behind them
- Claims that are specific, sourced and safe for an engine to repeat
Credibility & reputation
- Reviews and ratings across the platforms the engines actually read
- Consistent core facts, name, place and services, everywhere you appear
- Authority and citations from places that vouch for you off your own site
Local & the map
- Google Business Profile and the local pack, tuned to how you are searched
- Location and service signals that put you in the right place at the right moment
- The proximity, prominence and relevance the map ranks on

How we report it
Movement, with variance. Never a guarantee.
AI Overview selection is undocumented and volatile, engine behaviour changes without notice, and the click impact of AI answers is genuinely contested. So we do not sell you a ranking or a citation. We commit to the method and the measurement: a dated Machine-Readiness Score, a tracked share of answer, and a plain report of what moved, by how much, and over what window. Every figure is measured and dated, and where a reading is sampled we say so and say how.
You can read exactly how the score is constructed on the methodology page, and see the primary research behind the method in the research library.
Where to start

Scope an engagement
Most start with the free score, then scope the build against what it shows. If you already know you want to move, tell us your business and we will read your surface and walk you through the scope before we talk numbers.

Questions about getting found on AI
Can you guarantee I will show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
No, and be wary of anyone who does. The engines decide what they cite and show, their selection is undocumented and it changes without notice. What we commit to is the work that makes you the kind of business they can find, read, trust and name, and a measured, dated read of whether it is moving. We report the movement with variance: what changed, by how much, and over what window.
Is this just SEO with a new name?
It includes classic SEO, because being crawlable and ranking still matters, but the job is wider. Ranking a page and being named inside a written answer are different outcomes with different signals. Search Surface Optimization works both at once: the technical and content foundation that ranks, and the legibility, credibility and answer-first structure that gets you into the answer above the links.
Do I just need an llms.txt file or an AI page to get picked up?
No. An llms.txt file signals that your site welcomes AI crawlers, which is worth having, but it is not a ranking or citation lever, and nobody who is honest will sell it as one. Getting named in AI answers comes from the same foundation as everything else: a legible site, a resolved entity, credible signals, and content worth quoting.
How fast does it work?
Slower than anyone would like, because the engines re-crawl and re-evaluate on their own schedule, not ours. Technical fixes register in weeks; authority and answer presence build over months. We measure on a fixed cadence so you see real movement against a baseline, not a story.
Do I need a whole new website?
Usually not. Most gains come from making what you already have legible, credible and answer-ready. If the site itself is the thing holding you back, slow, unreadable to a crawler, or thin, we say so plainly and scope the rebuild against what the reading shows, never by default.
How do you measure whether I am getting named in AI answers?
We assemble the set of questions your buyers actually ask, put them to the AI engines across repeated runs, and record when and how you are named or cited against your competitors. That gives a share of answer we can track over time. Where a reading is sampled, we say so and say how, and we never report a number we did not capture.
Be the answer, not a link nobody reaches.
Found, read, trusted and named, across classic search and every AI answer. It starts with a number, and the number is free.
