Imagine two local businesses in the same category with genuinely equivalent content. The same accurate claims, the same credentials, the same clear writing, the same fair prices. The other ranks respectably on a page of links almost no one scrolls to. The words are the same. The outcome is not. The difference is not persuasion; it is which surfaces carry the words.

This is the practical face of the single most quoted idea in media studies. McLuhan's claim that the medium is the message asks us to stop treating the surface as a neutral delivery pipe for content and to treat the surface itself as the thing that shapes the effect. Read outside the seminar room, it becomes an unusually direct instruction for anyone trying to be found and chosen: study the surfaces, not just the sentences.

What McLuhan actually claimed in 1964

Marshall McLuhan coined "the medium is the message" as the title of the first chapter of Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (McGraw-Hill, 1964). His argument was that the communication medium itself, not the content it carries, should be the primary object of study, because the form of a medium restructures perception and social organization independent of what is said through it. The content is the visible thing we argue about; the form is the quieter thing that decides how the content is received, and often it matters more.

It is worth reading the claim precisely rather than as a slogan. McLuhan wrote aphoristically, and the durable, defensible core is narrower than the myth around it: the form of a surface exerts an effect on perception and behavior that its content cannot fully override. That is the part this article rests on. We are not claiming content is irrelevant, and neither did he. We are claiming the surface sets the terms on which content is even encountered, which is a weaker and far more testable proposition than "content does not matter."

A medium is an environment, not a channel

The tradition that grew out of McLuhan sharpened the point from a paradox into a working idea. In media-ecology scholarship, a medium is treated not as a channel that passes messages along but as an environment, a complex message system that imposes on the people inside it certain ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. The field studies media the way ecology studies natural habitats: by their structure and their effect on the organisms, in this case people, living within them.

This is the load-bearing extension of McLuhan for a marketing reader. If a surface is an environment rather than a pipe, then choosing to occupy it, or failing to, is not a distribution decision made after the "real" creative work. It is a decision about which set of rules will govern whether your audience ever perceives you at all. The idea is older than the internet

The environmental view predates McLuhan. Harold Innis, his forerunner in what became the Toronto School, argued in The Bias of Communication (University of Toronto Press, 1951) that every medium carries an inherent bias, toward durability and time or toward reach and space, and that a civilization's trajectory tracks the bias of its dominant media. Neil Postman later gave the field its name, coining "media ecology" in a 1968 address and founding the graduate program at New York University in 1971. His definition is the cleanest: in biology a medium is something a culture grows in, and in media ecology the medium is the technology within which a human culture grows.

Postman pressed the argument to its sharpest form in Amusing Ourselves to Death (Viking Penguin, 1985), contending that the dominant medium of an age sets the terms of what counts as serious discourse at all; carrying that discourse is the smaller part of what it does. The claim that the shape of the surround, not any single message on it, governs what an audience can attend to is not a recent reaction to AI. It is roughly seventy years old, and the current migration is its latest instance rather than an exception to it.

The attention economy: the surround is a scarcity problem

If media form the environment, attention is the scarce resource flowing through it, and that scarcity is what turns "pick your surfaces" from a slogan into an allocation problem. The founding statement is Herbert Simon's. Writing in "Designing Organizations for an Information-Rich World" (in Martin Greenberger, ed., Computers, Communications, and the Public Interest, Johns Hopkins Press, 1971), the future Nobel laureate observed that information consumes the attention of its recipients, so that a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention and a need to allocate that attention efficiently among the overabundance of sources competing for it.

That single sentence is the theoretical floor under the whole reframe. Later work built directly on it: Michael Goldhaber named the "attention economy" for the network age in First Monday (1997), and Thomas Davenport and John Beck carried the phrase into mainstream business strategy in The Attention Economy (Harvard Business School Press, 2001). The through line is consistent across three decades. Content is effectively unlimited and cheap; attention is bounded and expensive. When the scarce resource is attention, and attention concentrates unevenly across surfaces, the rational question is not "is our message good" but "where does our audience's finite attention actually sit, and are we present there." Surface choice is the allocation of a scarce input, which is exactly the kind of decision that rewards measurement over instinct.

For a primary, government-methodology anchor rather than a vendor estimate, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics American Time Use Survey (2025 results, released 2026) reported that watching television remained the single largest leisure activity at 2.6 hours per day, while time spent playing games or using a computer for leisure rose from 25 minutes per day in 2015 to 37 minutes per day in 2025, and time spent socializing and communicating fell from 41 to 35 minutes over the same decade. Where attention goes is not one map

A key caveat keeps the reframe from overreaching. "Where attention goes" is not a single shared destination that a business can target once and be done. Algorithmic personalization means two people entering the same query can be routed to sharply different exposure. Eli Pariser named this the "filter bubble" (The Filter Bubble, Penguin Press, 2011), and while the concept is well established, the empirical magnitude of the effect is genuinely contested; studies disagree on how large it is, and it should not be cited as a settled quantity.

The scholarly account of how audiences actually form is James Webster's The Marketplace of Attention (MIT Press, 2014), which argues that attention is fragmented across many outlets, shaped jointly by user habit, social-network effects, provider strategy, and the measurement systems that feed recommendations. The operational consequence is specific and it constrains any glib "map the attention" pitch: because attention clusters by habit, network, and algorithmic mediation, there is no single average attention map that applies to every business. The surround has to be read per domain and per audience, not assumed once and reused. That is a limit on the method, and stating it plainly is part of reading McLuhan on his own terms rather than as a marketing costume.

Why surface choice is the primary lever

Put the pieces together and a disciplined operating claim emerges, no stronger than the evidence allows. Media are environments that select for different things (McLuhan, media ecology). Attention is the scarce resource those environments compete for (Simon and the attention-economics tradition). The distribution of that attention is measurably migrating (Reuters Institute, BLS) and is heterogeneous by audience (Webster, Pariser). It follows that the surface a business occupies sets the ceiling on the attention its content can earn, and message quality determines how much of that ceiling is realized. Both matter. This does not demote craft. The point is sequence and emphasis.
