The Missed-Call Economy Was Zero-Click Before AI Was: What Justdial's Two Decades Predict About the AI-Answer Shift

Last reviewed 2026-08-09. Written by Chandranshu Kumar, Founder, Raveneye Global. · 8 min read

Justdial's voice search model, built in 1996 around a single memorable phone number and later the pan-India voice line 88888-88888, rested on a zero click behavior: a caller could ask a question and get one spoken answer without ever seeing a screen. That is a zero-click interaction by definition, decades before the term existed. India also has a documented, independent precedent for the same behavior at even larger scale: missed-call marketing, where tens of millions of people trigger a callback or SMS with a free, unanswered ring rather than typing or clicking anything. Both patterns indicate that Indian consumers have a long, well-evidenced comfort with asking an intermediary and acting on the single answer it hands back. What is not yet established is whether that comfort transfers cleanly to generative AI answer engines, or whether Justdial itself, whose own quarterly traffic dipped even as its revenue grew in its most recent reported quarter, is the incumbent best positioned to benefit from it. This analysis sets out what the record shows, and states plainly what it does not yet prove.

An intermediary built to answer, not to be browsed

V. S. S. Mani started Justdial in 1996 with roughly 50,000 rupees in seed capital, five employees, and borrowed furniture. The founding insight was not a website; there was no website to build a business around yet in India in 1996. It was a phone number. Mani acquired a memorable Mumbai landline, and the model was direct: a caller dialed the number, described what they needed, a human operator searched a database, and the caller got a spoken answer on the same call.

That number was later extended into the pan-India voice line still in service today, 88888-88888, staffed around the clock with multilingual operators. The interaction it was built around has a name now that did not exist when Justdial launched it: zero-click. A caller never touched a link, a page, or a result list. They asked, and something else did the finding and the deciding about which answer to hand back.

Justdial did not put that model online until 2007, when justdial.com and its first apps launched, more than a decade after the voice service began. The sequence matters. The habit of asking an intermediary for one answer and acting on it was established on the phone first, and the web presence was added on top of an already-proven behavior, not the other way around.

Two decades of scale before generative AI existed

Justdial listed on the NSE and BSE in June 2013, a public, audited record of a business built almost entirely on the ask-and-get-an-answer model, at a scale few local-search intermediaries anywhere have reached. In July 2021, Reliance Retail Ventures acquired a controlling 66.95 percent stake in Justdial for 3,497 crore rupees, close to $469 million. Isha Ambani, director of Reliance Retail, framed the deal at the time as part of the group's "New Commerce" strategy, saying the investment underlined a commitment to "boosting the digital ecosystem for millions of our partner merchants, micro, small and medium enterprises."

The financials since the acquisition show a business still growing on its original model. For the full year ended March 2025, Justdial reported operating revenue of 1,141.9 crore rupees, up 9.5 percent year on year, and net profit of 584.2 crore rupees, up 61 percent, with 48.8 million active business listings and 191.3 million quarterly unique visitors across web, mobile, app, and voice in its fourth quarter, itself up 11.8 percent year on year. In its own commentary on those results, the company named "Generative AI integration" as a forward priority alongside enriched listings and merchant experience, an acknowledgment from inside the business that the interface it built for is now changing again.

That last point deserves a second look, because the most recent quarter on record complicates a simple growth story. For the quarter ended December 2025, Justdial reported revenue up 6.4 percent year on year to 305.7 crore rupees and active listings up to 52.8 million, but total quarterly unique visitors fell to 184.5 million, down 3.5 percent year on year even as it rose 6.6 percent from the prior quarter. Revenue and listings kept climbing while raw traffic softened on an annual basis. A single quarter is not a trend, but it is a fact worth sitting with rather than smoothing over.

The missed-call economy: a nationwide rehearsal for zero-click

Justdial is not the only, or even the largest, evidence that Indian consumers were comfortable with zero-effort, zero-click asking long before generative AI. Missed-call marketing, a caller dials a number and hangs up before it connects, triggering an automatic callback, SMS, or IVR response, became a mainstream Indian communication channel because it cost the caller nothing on a prepaid connection and required no typing at all.

The scale documented in industry and trade coverage from the period is substantial. Hindustan Unilever's "Kan Khajura Tesan" missed-call radio campaign reached 50 million subscribers and generated roughly 1 billion ad impressions. Zee TV's "L'il Master" talent shows drew 100 million missed calls as a voting mechanism, with a response rate reported at twelve times higher than SMS voting on the same shows. State Bank of India built an entire "SBI Quick" service around missed-call banking, letting customers check a balance or request a mini-statement with an unanswered ring rather than an app or a branch visit. As one analysis of the phenomenon put it, the appeal was "more than cost, it is cultural," reflecting literacy levels and the prevalence of low-cost feature phones across a population where typing in English was a real barrier that dialing a number was not.

Read next to Justdial's history, the pattern is not a coincidence limited to one company. It is a documented, independent, multi-sector behavior: when the alternative to reading and typing was speaking and listening, tens of millions of Indians consistently chose the version that required neither literacy nor a screen. That is the behavioral floor a generative answer, delivered as a single spoken or written response with no browsing required, is landing on.

What Reliance bought was not a search engine

The strategic logic of the Reliance deal is worth reading carefully, because it was not framed, at the time or since, as an acquisition of search technology. Ambani's stated rationale centered on merchants, specifically small and medium ones, and Justdial has since been folded toward Reliance's JioMart hyperlocal commerce push, tightening the connection between a merchant's Justdial listing and order fulfillment through Reliance's retail and delivery infrastructure.

What Reliance appears to have valued is not a ranked list of ten blue links. It is a merchant database paired with a two-decade-old consumer habit of calling that database and accepting whichever few answers it returns as sufficient. That is a different asset than a search index, and it is closer in kind to what a generative answer engine also is: a single point of mediation between a question and a small set of names, with the chooser doing the narrowing before the asker sees anything.

The interface is changing again, and the habit is what is being tested

Generative answer engines are now a documented, growing part of how Indians search, though the numbers describe an adoption curve still early in its climb rather than a settled state. The Internet in India Report 2025, jointly produced by the Internet and Mobile Association of India and Kantar and released at the India Digital Summit in January 2026, found that 44 percent of India's active internet users had used an AI-enabled feature such as voice search, image-based search, chatbots, or AI filters, rising to 57 percent among users aged 15 to 24, against a total active internet base of 958 million.

Google has been building the Indian-language layer under that adoption directly. At Google for India in October 2024, the company extended AI Overviews in India beyond Hindi into Bengali, Telugu, and Marathi, and added Hindi plus eight additional Indian languages, including Tamil, Kannada, Gujarati, and Punjabi, to Gemini Live. The infrastructure for a spoken or typed regional-language question to produce one synthesized answer, the same shape of interaction Justdial's operators have handled by phone since 1996, is being built directly into the search layer itself.

What determines whether a given business is the one named inside that synthesized answer is a separate and still-developing question. The peer-reviewed research that exists on the mechanics of generative answers, rather than on adoption rates, points to corroboration and structure rather than raw traffic. The 2024 paper that introduced "Generative Engine Optimization" found that content carrying cited statistics, quotations, and authoritative sourcing measurably increased a source's likelihood of being cited inside a generated answer. Being called on the phone or being remembered by an intermediary's database is not, on the evidence available, the same thing as being legible to that mechanism.

What the precedent does, and does not, establish

It is tempting to draw a straight line from "Indians have a two-decade, well-documented habit of asking an intermediary for one answer and acting on it" to "the businesses that already won inside that habit, via Justdial listings or map-pack visibility, will automatically be the ones AI answer engines cite too." That line is not yet supported by any public dataset, and this piece does not claim to have measured it. No published study tracks whether a business's Justdial ranking, listing tenure, or paid-campaign status correlates with how often it is named in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, or Gemini answers to the same local queries in the same city. That comparison does not yet exist in the public record.

A rigorous version of that comparison is straightforward to describe, even though nobody has published it: a matched sample of local businesses across Indian cities and categories, their standing on Justdial and Google Business Profile, and a repeated, dated set of AI-answer queries for the same local intents, tracked over time to see whether legacy local-search incumbency predicts AI-answer citation. Until that work exists, the behavioral precedent is well evidenced, and the specific prediction about which businesses inherit it is not.

There is a live, contrary signal worth weighing, too. Justdial's own most recent quarterly traffic fell year on year even as revenue and listings grew, and the company has publicly named "Generative AI integration" as something it still has to build, not something it already has. A two-decade incumbency in phone-based local search is a real asset. It is not, on current evidence, a guarantee of continuity into an interface it did not design.

Reading the record straight

Two things can be true at once. India's zero-click habit is real, decades old, and documented across multiple independent channels, Justdial's voice-first model, missed-call marketing at national scale, and now a fast-growing share of internet users touching AI-enabled search features directly. And the question of which specific businesses that habit will favor in its newest form remains genuinely open, not because the data is hidden, but because the comparison has not yet been run.

For an individual business owner, the practical takeaway does not require waiting for that research to land. The mechanism that appears to govern which businesses get named inside a generated answer, corroboration, structure, and consistency across the sources an engine can read, is measurable today, independent of whether the historical Justdial-to-AI correlation ever gets proven. The safest reading of a two-decade precedent is not "the old winner wins again automatically." It is "the underlying willingness to accept one handed-back answer is not new, so the businesses that make themselves legible to whichever intermediary is doing the handing back, human operator, search algorithm, or generative model, have the advantage the historical pattern actually supports."

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

Did Justdial invent zero-click search in India?

Not by itself. Justdial's phone-first, ask-and-get-an-answer model, running since 1996, is one well-documented example. Missed-call marketing, an independent and even larger-scale Indian pattern documented across brands, broadcasters, and banks, shows the same underlying comfort with a zero-effort, no-typing interaction. Together they establish the behavior as a longstanding national pattern, not a single company's invention.

What is missed-call marketing and why is it relevant to AI search?

It is a channel where a caller dials a number and hangs up before it connects, triggering an automatic callback or SMS at no cost to the caller. It matters here because it demonstrates, independently of Justdial, that Indian consumers have a long history of accepting a single handed-back response instead of browsing, the same basic shape as a generative AI answer.

Why did Reliance acquire Justdial?

Reliance Retail acquired a 66.95% controlling stake in July 2021 for about $469 million, stating the deal supported its "New Commerce" strategy of connecting small and medium merchants to its retail and delivery network. The stated rationale centered on the merchant database and reach, not search technology specifically.

Does having a Justdial listing help a business show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

That specific correlation has not been publicly measured. No published study compares a business's Justdial standing to how often it is cited inside generative AI answers for the same local queries. The behavioral precedent for zero-click habits is well established; the transfer of that precedent to a specific platform's AI-answer visibility is not yet proven either way.

Is Justdial's traffic growing or shrinking as AI search rises?

The most recent reported quarter (ended December 2025) showed revenue and active listings still rising year on year, but total quarterly unique visitors fell 3.5% year on year even as they rose from the prior quarter. That is one quarter of data, not a settled trend, but it is a real complicating signal rather than a clean growth story.

What should a small business actually do with this history?

Treat the precedent as evidence that Indian buyers are comfortable accepting a single answer from an intermediary, not as proof that yesterday's intermediary automatically wins tomorrow's. The practical response is to make the business legible, structured, consistent, and corroborated, to whichever intermediary is doing the choosing now, rather than assuming legacy visibility carries over.

About this analysis

Justdial's history shows that Indian buyers have long been comfortable accepting one handed-back answer instead of browsing a list, and that habit is now migrating to AI answer engines. What the record does not show is which businesses inherit that visibility automatically. By default, none do. This finding is part of Raveneye's ongoing machine-readiness research, which reads a business's standing across classic search, the local map pack, AI answers, and reputation, and reports it as a Machine-Readiness Score rather than assuming a legacy listing carries over.
