The Jio-Gemini Default: When 500 Million New Users Never Learn to Click at All
In October 2025, Google and Reliance announced free Gemini AI Pro access, an offer worth roughly Rs 35,100, for Jio mobile subscribers, a base that crossed 500 million connections in 2026. The arrangement is the Jio-Gemini default this analysis examines, and it echoes Jio's 2016 entry, when one operator's pricing decision reset how hundreds of millions of Indians used the internet within months. This time the default being installed is not cheap data; it is a chat interface. Gemini already holds more than half of India's AI-chatbot download market, well ahead of ChatGPT, largely because it ships preinstalled on the Android phones that dominate the country. Google separately states that India is already its largest market worldwide for voice and visual search, and independent measurement shows most Google searches everywhere now end without a click at all, a zero-click pattern documented across markets that already had the click habit. Whether a cohort whose first digital habit is asking an assistant a question ever develops the older habit of scanning and clicking a results page is not yet established in any public study. This analysis sets out what is documented, and names precisely what remains an open, testable question.
What Google and Jio actually announced
On October 30, 2025, Google and Reliance Jio announced a partnership that bundles Google's paid AI Pro subscription into Jio's mobile plans at no extra cost to eligible subscribers. Sundar Pichai called it a way to put "Google's cutting-edge AI tools in the hands of consumers, businesses, and India's vibrant developer community." Mukesh Ambani framed the goal as an India where "every citizen and enterprise can harness intelligent tools to create, innovate, and grow." The offer, an 18-month subscription valued at roughly Rs 35,100 (about $396), initially rolled out to Jio users aged 18 to 25 before Reliance expanded eligibility within weeks to any Jio SIM holder on an active unlimited 5G plan of Rs 349 or above, prepaid or postpaid.
The package at launch included the Gemini 2.5 Pro model inside the Gemini app, higher limits for Google's Nano Banana and Veo 3.1 image and video generation, expanded NotebookLM access, and 2 TB of shared cloud storage across Photos, Gmail, Drive, and WhatsApp backups. Jio's own offer page has since been updated to reflect Google's newer Gemini 3 model and 5 TB of storage, activated by tapping a banner inside the MyJio app and registering with a Gmail address, once per mobile number, with no payment or auto-renewal after the 18 months lapse.
The scale is the point. Jio's wireless base reached 503.58 million subscribers by June 2026, a 39.3 percent share of India's mobile market, according to TRAI's monthly telecom data. A single commercial decision by two companies now determines the default AI experience for a subscriber base larger than the population of every country on earth except China and India itself.
India has run this experiment before
This is not the first time a Reliance decision has reset the base rate of digital behavior for the country. When Jio launched commercially in September 2016, a gigabyte of mobile data in India cost roughly Rs 225 (about $3). Jio's welcome offer gave new subscribers free voice calling, 100 text messages a day, and 4 GB of data a day at no charge, and the company reported crossing 100 million subscribers within 170 days, according to reporting by Rest of World. By 2019 the price of a gigabyte had fallen to about Rs 18.5, and competitors were forced to match the cuts or lose subscribers, dragging industry-wide average revenue per user down by roughly half over the same period.
That collapse in price did not just add users, it changed what "using the internet" meant for a first-time Indian smartphone owner. A generation of new users never experienced a world of metered, expensive data; unlimited video and voice were simply how the internet worked from their first session. The 2025 Gemini bundle repeats the same structure with a different variable. It is not the cost of connectivity being set to zero this time; it is the cost, and therefore the default choice, of asking a question. The open comparison is whether a generation whose first digital habit is a free AI subscription forms a different baseline behavior than one that grew up typing queries into a search box, the way the 2016 cohort formed a different baseline around data usage than the generation before it.
Why free-and-default beats acquired preference
The behavioral economics literature on defaults offers a reason to take this seriously beyond the analogy. In a widely cited 2003 study published in Science, Eric Johnson and Daniel Goldstein compared organ-donation consent rates across countries with opt-in versus opt-out policies and found the pre-set option, not persuasion or awareness, was overwhelmingly what determined the outcome. A large body of follow-up research since has replicated the pattern across insurance, retirement savings, and software settings: whatever is pre-selected is what most people end up using, regardless of stated preference.
Search behavior already shows the same pattern playing out commercially. Google's 2022 payments to Apple for default search placement inside Safari ran to roughly $20 billion in a single year, with Apple receiving 36 percent of the resulting search-ad revenue, an arrangement a U.S. federal court found in 2024 had illegally entrenched Google's market position even as it allowed the payments to continue under new restrictions. Companies do not spend tens of billions of dollars a year on default placement because users would find their way there anyway; they spend it because the default is most of the outcome.
India is the clearest live illustration of that principle for AI assistants specifically. Sensor Tower's market data shows Google Gemini holding more than half of India's AI-chatbot download market as of the third quarter of 2024, a share far larger than Gemini commands in the United States or United Kingdom. Several industry analyses citing the same underlying Sensor Tower data put the specific split near 52 percent for Gemini against roughly 32 percent for ChatGPT in that period, though that precise breakdown should be read as an industry estimate rather than an audited figure. The mechanism behind it is not disputed: Android runs more than 95 percent of Indian smartphones, and Gemini ships preinstalled on them. The Jio bundle now stacks a second default, a bundled subscription, on top of a first default, the preinstalled app.
The click is already disappearing, for everyone
Even before this bundle reaches full scale, the click itself is becoming the exception rather than the rule. SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data found that Google searches in the United States ended without any click 68.01 percent of the time across January through April 2026, up from 60.45 percent in 2024, a 7.56 percentage point jump in two years. The same research notes that AI Overviews, now appearing on more than 20 percent of Google searches, cut click-through rates by close to 60 percent whenever they show, and that the analysis actually excludes Google's mobile app, where zero-click behavior is likely higher still.
Pew Research Center's July 2025 browsing-panel study puts a finer point on the mechanism: users clicked a traditional organic result in about 8 percent of searches when an AI Overview appeared, versus 15 percent when it did not, and clicked a link inside the AI summary itself in only about 1 percent of searches. Ranking well no longer reliably earns the visit that ranking used to earn. Being named inside the answer, not listed below it, increasingly decides whether a business gets seen at all.
This baseline already existed for search users who learned to click years ago and are now clicking less. The Jio-Gemini bundle asks a different, additional question: what does the baseline look like for someone whose formative search sessions happen inside a chat window that was free, preinstalled, and bundled with their phone plan from day one, rather than a results page they were once taught to scan.
India is already the world's most voice-first Google market
Google has said directly, in its own October 2025 announcement expanding AI Mode to seven additional Indian languages, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, alongside English and Hindi, that India represents "our largest user base for both voice and visual search globally." The same announcement introduced Search Live, a conversational feature combining voice input and live camera search inside AI Mode, and named India as the first market outside the United States to receive it. Globally, Google reports that AI Mode queries run nearly three times longer than traditional keyword searches, evidence that once given a conversational interface, users ask fuller questions rather than short keyword fragments.
India's underlying internet base is also already leaning toward AI-mediated interaction rather than the query-and-click pattern that defined the previous two decades of search. The IAMAI-Kantar "Internet in India 2025" report, based on a sample of roughly 100,000 respondents across more than 400 towns and 1,000 villages, put India's active internet user base at 958 million, up about 8 percent year on year, with rural India, now 548 million users and growing at nearly four times the urban rate, accounting for the majority. Of that base, 44 percent had already used an AI-enabled feature such as voice search, image search, or a chatbot, rising to 57 percent among users aged 15 to 24, the exact cohort Google and Jio targeted first with the free Gemini offer.
The open question, and what remains unmeasured
No public dataset yet measures whether a cohort that starts on a free, bundled, conversational AI assistant ever forms the older click-and-scan search habit at a meaningfully different rate than a cohort that started on a search results page. That is a genuine gap, not a rhetorical one, and this analysis does not claim to have closed it. What exists instead is a set of adjacent, independently sourced facts that make the question worth asking rather than dismissing: a default-effect literature showing pre-set options overwhelmingly beat acquired preference; a directly comparable precedent in Jio's own 2016 rollout, which did measurably reset national data-usage behavior within months; a documented, already-dominant Gemini download share in India tied explicitly to default placement rather than user choice; a documented decline in click-through behavior across search generally, even among users who already have the click habit; and Google's own statement that India is already its most voice-first and visual-first search market on earth.
A defensible research design exists for closing this gap, and it does not require speculation to describe. A panel study tracking first-time Jio-Gemini claimants against a matched cohort of Jio subscribers who did not claim the offer, measured over 12 to 18 months on query behavior, click-through rate on any search surface, and reliance on AI-summarized answers versus visited pages, would directly test whether the bundled default produces a different search-behavior baseline. No such study has been published as of this writing, by Google, Reliance, or an independent research body, and none should be assumed to exist until it does.
What is already established, independent of that open question, is substantial. The click is getting rarer across the entire search population, India is already the country where voice and visual, conversational interaction is most advanced, and the newest 500 million-plus subscriber cohort is being handed a chat interface as its free, pre-set, bundled default before most of them have formed any search habit at all. Whether or not the click habit ever fully forms for that cohort, the businesses those users are trying to find need to be legible to the assistant answering them, not just present on a page it might never send anyone to.
