Fourth in the World: What India's 26.8% AI Overviews Prevalence Rate Means for a Small Business's Web Traffic
India ranks 4th out of 50 countries measured for AI Overviews prevalence, with 26.8% of roughly 30 million tracked keywords triggering an AI Overview, according to an Ahrefs analysis of 108 million AI Overview queries published in November 2025. That share sits well above the United States, which ranks 13th at 20.5%, and above Canada (19.2%) and the United Kingdom (19.1%). Only Indonesia (37.2%), the Philippines and Mexico (29.1% each), and Nigeria (26.4%, just behind India) rank higher or comparably. For a country with 958 million active internet users and more than 9.2 crore registered MSMEs, a coverage rate above one in four searches is not a minor SEO footnote. It is a measurable share of the country's search traffic that now resolves inside an answer box before a business's own page is ever loaded, and the global click-through data on what that costs a website is already well documented, even where India-specific, MSME-segmented figures do not yet exist.
The number: 26.8%, and why it outranks the United States
In November 2025, Ahrefs published an analysis of its Brand Radar database, covering 108 million AI Overview queries across 50 countries, to determine where Google's AI Overviews appear most often in search results. The finding that surprised most SEO observers was not that AI Overviews are common. It was where they are most common. Indonesia leads the ranking at 37.2% of all tracked keywords, followed by the Philippines and Mexico, tied at 29.1%. India sits fourth, at 26.8%, drawn from roughly 30 million keywords and 8,026,000 individual AI Overview appearances. Nigeria follows immediately behind India at 26.4%.
The United States, the market most commentary treats as the default reference point for AI search behavior, ranks 13th, at 20.5%. Canada sits at 19.2% (17th) and the United Kingdom at 19.1% (18th). Put plainly, a search run in India is meaningfully more likely to end in an AI-composed answer than the identical kind of search run in the US, UK, or Canada. That gap, more than six percentage points between India and the US, is the headline fact this article is built on, and it comes from a single, disclosed, large-sample methodology rather than a handful of anecdotal queries.
Ahrefs describes its method as comparing the volume of keywords that return an AI Overview against the total tracked keyword volume for each country in its search index, then ranking the resulting coverage percentage. It is a measurement of prevalence across the general keyword universe Ahrefs tracks, not a survey of user intent or a study of any single vertical, and that distinction matters for how the number should and should not be used, which the later sections in this piece address directly.
A market built for high AI Overview coverage
Two facts about India's digital footprint help explain, without fully proving causation, why its coverage rate lands where it does. First, scale: India's active internet user base reached 958 million as of the Internet in India Report 2025, an annual study jointly produced by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Kantar, with 57% of those users now based in rural areas. Second, behavior: the same report found that 44% of India's internet users already report using AI-enabled search features such as voice search, image-based search, or chatbot-style queries, with usage highest among users aged 15 to 24 (57%) and 25 to 44 (52%).
Second, timing: Google added India to the AI Overviews rollout on August 15, 2024, in the same wave as the United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil, each with local-language support built in from launch. India was not a late or secondary market for this feature; it was part of the first major international expansion beyond the US, and three of the five countries that joined India in that wave (Indonesia, Mexico, and by extension similar markets) now sit at the very top of the global prevalence ranking Ahrefs measured over a year later.
None of this establishes a single, clean causal story. Ahrefs' study does not test why coverage varies by country, and this article will not claim it does. What the two datasets together do show is a market with the scale, the AI-search adoption behavior, and the rollout history consistent with the high coverage rate the Brand Radar data measured. That is a coherent picture, not a proven mechanism.
What a rising coverage rate does to a click
A coverage percentage only matters commercially if it changes what happens after the AI Overview appears. On that question, the evidence, though not India-specific, is unusually well documented at the global level. Ahrefs' most recent update, comparing Google Search Console click-through data from December 2023 (before AI Overviews existed) against December 2025, found that the presence of an AI Overview now correlates with a 58% lower click-through rate for the position-one organic result, up sharply from the 34.5% reduction the same team measured in April 2025 using an earlier dataset.
Pew Research Center reached a similar conclusion from a different angle. Its July 2025 study of a representative browsing panel found that when a Google AI summary was present on the results page, users clicked a traditional organic result about 8% of the time, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. Users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself in only about 1% of sessions. Two independent methodologies, one built on Search Console impressions and clicks, the other on observed browsing behavior, point to the same conclusion: an AI Overview does not just sit above the organic results, it absorbs most of the click volume those results used to receive.
Neither study isolates India, and neither breaks the effect down by business size. That gap is real: the 58% and the 8%-versus-15% figures are global averages, not measurements of what happens specifically to an MSME's listing when it loses a click in Chennai or Coimbatore. What can be said is that India's 26.8% prevalence rate determines how often that global click-loss pattern gets a chance to apply at all. A market where more than one in four searches triggers an AI Overview has more opportunities for that click loss to occur than a market where fewer than one in five does.
The MSME math behind the headline number
India's MSME sector is not a peripheral part of the economy the 26.8% figure lands on. As of August 9, 2026, more than 9.2 crore (roughly 92 million) enterprises are registered across the government's Udyam and Udyam Assist portals, according to the live Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises dashboard. The sector contributes 30.1% of India's GDP and 45.73% of the country's exports, according to the Ministry of MSME, as stated by the Union MSME Minister in a July 2025 press briefing carried by the Press Information Bureau.
That scale is precisely why a rising AI Overview prevalence rate is worth an MSME owner's attention rather than a search marketer's alone. Nearly a third of national economic output runs through businesses that, in most cases, do not have the in-house SEO or content teams that larger enterprises use to monitor how they appear inside a Google AI Overview, an AI Mode response, or a ChatGPT answer. The prevalence rate describes how often the answer box shows up. It says nothing, on its own, about how many of those 9.2 crore businesses are structured well enough, with clear service pages, consistent listings, and corroborated credentials, to be one of the sources an AI Overview actually cites when it does appear.
That second question, how AI-Overview-ready India's MSMEs are as a population, is not one this data answers, and it should not be answered here as if it were. It is the boundary of what the Ahrefs study, the government registration figures, and the click-through research each individually establish.
What is measured, and what is still an open question
It is worth being precise about what the 26.8% figure is and is not. It is a measured share of the general keyword universe Ahrefs tracks for India, drawn from a 108-million-query, 50-country dataset with a disclosed methodology. It is not a measurement of MSME-relevant queries specifically, not a measurement of commercial or transactional intent specifically, and not a measurement of how often any individual small business, or small businesses as a category, is cited inside the AI Overviews that do appear.
No public, audited dataset currently isolates AI Overview prevalence for local-business or MSME-relevant search categories in India, the way Ahrefs isolated the all-keyword country ranking. Building that dataset would require sampling a large set of commercial, local-intent queries, in Hindi, Hinglish, and regional languages as well as English, tracking whether an AI Overview appears, and then, separately, tracking which sources it cites. That is a proposed method, not a reported result, and this article treats it as exactly that: an open measurement problem.
The same caution applies to the click-loss figures. The 58% and the 8%-versus-15% numbers are global. Whether India's figure runs higher, given its above-average prevalence rate, or lower, given different user click habits, is a reasonable question with no published answer yet. Until an India-specific, Search-Console-based study exists, this piece states the global finding, states India's prevalence rate, and lets the reader draw the directional (not precise) inference the data actually supports.
Reading the number correctly
Three things are true at once, and none of them contradicts the others. India's AI Overview coverage rate, at 26.8%, is real, measured, and higher than the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The global research on what an AI Overview does to a click, a roughly 58% reduction for the position-one result, is also real and measured, though not specific to India. And the question of how that combination plays out for India's 9.2 crore MSMEs specifically remains open, because no study yet segments the prevalence data by business size or local commercial intent.
The practical response to that mix of solid and open data is not to panic and not to dismiss the finding as marketing noise. It is to treat the 26.8% figure as what it is: a country-level base rate that determines how often the answer-box moment happens at all in the Indian market, and a strong reason for any India-based business to find out, specifically, whether it currently shows up when that moment occurs for its own customers.
