The Answer Box Ate the Click: Mapping Google's AI Overviews Rollout in India Since August 2024

Last reviewed 2026-08-09. Written by Chandranshu Kumar, Founder, Raveneye Global. · 8 min read

Google's AI Overviews rollout in India did not begin as a quiet test that expanded only after proving itself elsewhere. India was one of six launch markets for AI Overviews on August 16, 2024, alongside Brazil, Japan, the UK, Indonesia, and Mexico, built for English and Hindi from day one. Ten weeks later Google scaled the feature to more than 100 countries and over a billion monthly users. Through 2025 the company brought its newer AI Mode to India first outside the US, then added Hindi and seven more Indian languages, then introduced its voice-and-camera Search Live feature in India before any other market except the US. This analysis sets out that timeline as a series of dated, sourced milestones and considers what the pace of the rollout suggests for a small business that has not yet measured whether it appears inside these answers.

A rollout most Indian MSMEs never saw happen

Most narratives about generative search treat India as a market that eventually caught up to a change that started elsewhere. The record does not support that account. Google placed India in the first cohort of countries to receive AI Overviews, and built the India version with a Hindi toggle and audio playback from the first release, not as a later localization patch. The same pattern held with AI Mode in 2025: India was the first market outside the United States to receive it, and later the first market outside the United States to receive Google's voice-and-camera Search Live feature.

For most small business owners, none of this arrived as an announcement. It arrived as a gradual, largely unremarked change in what appears above a business's own listing when a customer searches for what it sells. This analysis reconstructs the timeline from Google's own release posts and contemporaneous reporting, dates the milestones, and then considers the question the timeline raises: what the pace of the rollout means for a business that has not yet checked whether it appears inside the answer.

August 2024: the answer box lands, in English and Hindi

On August 16, 2024, Google announced it was bringing AI Overviews, AI-made summaries that appear above the traditional list of blue links, to six new countries: India, Brazil, Japan, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, and Mexico. India's version shipped with country-specific features rather than a plain port of the US product. Users could toggle between English and Hindi results without leaving the results page, and could tap a "Listen" button to hear the AI Overview read aloud, a feature Google said Indian users engaged with more than users in other launch countries.

The Hindi implementation was not fully mature at launch. Reporting at the time noted that some Hindi queries failed to return an overview if a searcher varied sentence structure or word choice, a reminder that generative answers over Indian languages were, and in places still are, an earlier-stage capability than the English product. The direction was set from week one regardless: India's answer layer would be bilingual by design, not English-only with Hindi added later.

October 2024: from launch market to global default

Ten weeks after the six-country expansion, Google scaled AI Overviews far past a rollout and into a default. On October 28, 2024, the company announced the feature was rolling out to more than 100 countries and territories, in six languages including Hindi, and projected it would reach more than a billion monthly users. What had been a bounded experiment in a handful of markets three months earlier was, by late October 2024, the ambient state of Google Search for a majority of the countries Google operates in.

For an Indian MSME, this is the point at which "AI Overviews might show up sometimes" stopped being an accurate description. By the end of October 2024, an AI-made summary was a standing feature of the results page for a large share of queries a customer might type, in the language that customer typed it in.

2025: AI Mode arrives, first outside the US in India

Where AI Overviews sits above a normal results page, AI Mode is a fuller conversational search experience built on a custom version of Gemini, letting a user ask longer, multi-part questions and follow up on the answer the way they would in a chat interface. Google chose India as the first market to receive it outside the United States, a sequencing decision the company tied explicitly to India's scale and to Lens usage, noting more people use Google Lens in India every month than in any other country.

June to July 2025: from Labs experiment to general rollout

On June 24, 2025, Google introduced AI Mode to India as an opt-in experiment inside Search Labs, in English only. The gap between experiment and general availability was short: on July 8, 2025, Google began rolling AI Mode out to everyone in India, no Labs signup required, appearing as a new tab in Search and in the Google app, still in English at that stage.

The scale by midyear

The two products' combined reach became public on July 23, 2025, when Google CEO Sundar Pichai disclosed on Alphabet's Q2 2025 earnings call that AI Overviews had reached 2 billion monthly users, up from 1.5 billion two months earlier, and that AI Mode had surpassed 100 million monthly active users across its two live markets at the time, the US and India. India was not a footnote market in that figure; it was one of exactly two countries where AI Mode existed at all when the 100 million number was reported.

September to October 2025: Hindi, six more Indian languages, and Search Live

The English-only phase of AI Mode's India rollout was brief. Reporting from September 8, 2025 noted that the prior month Google had already expanded AI Mode's English-language availability to 180 additional markets worldwide. That same September 8 announcement added five new languages to AI Mode, including Hindi, alongside Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese, built on Google's custom version of Gemini 2.5 for stronger language understanding.

A month later, on October 8, 2025, Google went further inside India specifically, adding seven more Indian languages to AI Mode: Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. The same announcement debuted Search Live, a voice-and-camera conversational feature, with Google stating plainly that "India will be the first country outside the U.S." to get it, available in both English and Hindi from launch.

Fourteen months, eight dated milestones

Laid end to end, the public record shows roughly a milestone every six to eight weeks for more than a year: the August 2024 six-country launch, the October 2024 scale to 100-plus countries, the June 2025 Labs experiment, the July 2025 general rollout, the July 2025 usage disclosure, the August 2025 180-market English expansion, the September 2025 Hindi launch, and the October 2025 seven-language and Search Live launch. That is not the cadence of a market being tested cautiously. It is the cadence of a company treating India as a lead market for its answer-layer products, not a trailing one.

The context that makes the pace matter is India's own internet base. The 2024 Internet in India report from the Internet and Mobile Association of India and Kantar put active internet users at 886 million, up 8 percent year over year, with 98 percent of users consuming content in an Indic language. Google's own sequencing, English first, Hindi within roughly a year, seven more Indian languages within another two months, tracks that reality closely. The answer layer was not built for India after the fact; it was built to meet a mostly non-English-first internet population on close to its own rollout timeline.

Set against India's roughly 63.4 million (6.3 crore) MSME units, the population most exposed to this shift is exactly the population least likely to have measured it. No public dataset yet reports what share of MSME-relevant queries, plumbers, tailors, clinics, manufacturers, wholesalers, now trigger an AI Overview or AI Mode response in India, in English or in an Indic language, or what share of those responses cite the business's own page rather than a directory, marketplace, or aggregator. That is an open measurement question, not a settled one, and the answer engine research that does exist, the peer-reviewed Generative Engine Optimization study and Pew Research's 2025 click-through work, was conducted on English-language, largely US-centric samples rather than the Indian, multilingual query mix this timeline describes. A rigorous read of the Indian case would need a documented, repeatable method: a fixed query set spanning categories and Indic languages, sampled across the AI Overview and AI Mode surfaces on a fixed cadence, with citation presence and source type logged per query. Nobody has published that dataset for India yet.

How to read this timeline instead of just noting it

The useful takeaway is not that AI Overviews or AI Mode exist in India, most owners already sense that from their own searching. It is that the distribution layer changed on a fast, deliberately localized schedule, in the language mix Indian buyers actually use, while the businesses depending on that traffic mostly kept measuring the same metrics they always had: rank position, click volume, form fills. None of those metrics indicate whether a business was named inside an AI Overview or an AI Mode answer, in English or in Hindi, in a given month.

That gap between what changed and what gets measured is the practical argument for checking, specifically and periodically, whether a business is legible to these systems at all, rather than assuming presence on the web is the same thing as presence inside the answer.

Glossary

AI Overviews
Google's AI-made summary that appears above the traditional list of search results, synthesizing an answer from multiple sources and citing a subset of them. Launched in the US in May 2024 and expanded to India on August 16, 2024.
AI Mode
A fuller conversational search experience inside Google Search, built on a custom version of Gemini, that supports longer multi-part questions, follow-ups, and voice or image input. Launched in India on June 24, 2025 as its first market outside the US.
Search Labs
Google's opt-in experimental program that lets users try features, including early versions of AI Mode, before general release. AI Mode ran in Labs in India for about two weeks before its July 8, 2025 general rollout.
Search Live
A voice-and-camera conversational feature inside AI Mode that lets a user talk and show the camera feed to Google in real time. Debuted in India on October 8, 2025, the first market outside the US to receive it.
A search that resolves entirely on the results page, inside an AI Overview, AI Mode answer, or featured snippet, without the user visiting any external website.
Machine legibility
The degree to which a business's identity, offering, and credibility are structured and corroborated clearly enough for an AI answer engine to read, trust, and cite it. The property this timeline's rollout speed makes newly urgent for Indian MSMEs.

Frequently asked questions

When did Google AI Overviews launch in India?

Google announced AI Overviews for India on August 16, 2024, as one of six launch countries alongside Brazil, Japan, the UK, Indonesia, and Mexico. The India version launched with English/Hindi toggling and an audio "Listen" feature from the start.

When did AI Mode become available in India?

Google introduced AI Mode to India on June 24, 2025 as an English-only Search Labs experiment, its first market outside the United States, then rolled it out to all Indian users without a Labs signup on July 8, 2025.

When did AI Mode get Hindi support?

AI Mode added Hindi on September 8, 2025, as one of five new languages alongside Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese. Seven more Indian languages, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, followed on October 8, 2025.

How many people use Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google disclosed on its Q2 2025 earnings call (July 23, 2025) that AI Overviews had reached 2 billion monthly users globally, up from 1.5 billion in May 2025, and that AI Mode had passed 100 million monthly active users across its only two live markets at that time, the US and India.

Is there data on how many Indian MSMEs actually appear inside AI Overviews or AI Mode answers?

Not yet publicly. No published dataset measures the share of Indian, Indic-language MSME queries that trigger an AI-made answer, or how often that answer cites the business itself versus a directory or marketplace. The English-language studies that do exist on AI-answer citation behavior were not conducted on an Indian sample.

Why does the rollout speed matter for a small business owner?

Because the answer layer arrived in India on a fast, deliberately localized schedule, roughly a milestone every six to eight weeks for more than a year, in the languages most Indian internet users actually search in. A business that has not checked whether it appears inside these answers is working from an assumption, not a measurement, about a layer that changed quickly and in its own language.

About this analysis

This timeline documents a pattern rather than a warning: the answer layer arrived in India quickly and in Hindi from near the start, which makes the assumption that a listed business is already visible a claim worth checking rather than accepting on faith. Raveneye's machine-readiness research approaches that question directly, measuring where a given business currently stands across classic search, the map pack, AI answers, and reputation signals, so any conclusion rests on a measurement of that business's own visibility rather than on a general timeline such as this one.
