For Veterinary & Pet Care

Get named when a pet owner asks ChatGPT for the best vet nearby

For independent veterinary clinics and animal hospitals currently ceding AI-answer visibility to Mars Petcare-owned brands, Banfield, VCA and BluePearl, by default.

Every engagement is directed by a technical specialist and reviewed before delivery.

What this is

The Pet Industry AI Visibility Index 2026 found Mars Petcare brands hold 27 to 30% of all veterinary AI citations combined, with Banfield alone at 11.5%, while roughly 80% of independent veterinary practices carry zero AI citation share in their own metro and category. That gap is not a verdict on care quality. Roughly 91% of AI citations come from third-party sources, not brand-owned sites, and corporate groups simply accumulate more of that third-party footprint, more reviews, more press, more directory presence, than an independent clinic ever gets a chance to build on its own. The AI-Answer Visibility Fix measures where your clinic appears across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews today, diagnoses why you are skipped, then engineers the entity signals, extractable content and structured data those engines read before naming anyone.

The problem

Why veterinary practices lose here

A pet owner opens ChatGPT or taps the AI answer above a Google search and asks for the best emergency vet or animal hospital near them. A short written answer comes back naming two or three practices. If your clinic is left off that list, you were not compared on price, beaten on reviews, or judged on your medicine. You were never surfaced, and the decision was half-formed before the owner ever reached a website, yours or a competitor's.

This is separate from Google rankings. A clinic can sit on page one for its main keyword and still be entirely absent from the AI-written answer above it. Winning a classic search result and being named inside a generated answer are two different outcomes with two different mechanics, and most owners have never checked the second, because nothing in normal reporting shows the gap.

The reason is mechanical: generated answers are stitched together from what the web says about a practice, its presence across directories and review sites, mentions on pages it does not own, and whether it resolves to one clear entity an engine can trust. When those signals are thin, an engine does the safe thing and names the brand it can describe with the most confidence, which is currently, and disproportionately, a Mars Petcare-owned chain.

And this is not one surface. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews each select sources differently, so being invisible is rarely a single miss. It is usually the same underlying thinness in entity and third-party signal costing a clinic visibility across several answer engines at once, quietly, in the exact moment a worried pet owner is deciding who to call.

The evidence

What the numbers show

  • Mars Petcare brands, Banfield, VCA and BluePearl, account for 27 to 30% of all veterinary AI citations combined, with Banfield alone at 11.5%, the single most-cited veterinary brand tested.

established 5W AI Communications, Pet Industry AI Visibility Index, 2026, independently covered by PR Newswire, AOL, Vet Candy and Health Technology Net.

  • An estimated 80% of independent veterinary practices carry zero AI citation share in their own metro and category.

  • Roughly 91% of AI citations across 23,000-plus analyzed citations came from third-party sources, not brand-owned sites.

  • Adding cited statistics, quotations and authoritative sources lifted a source's visibility inside generated answers by roughly 30 to 40% on average in tested systems.

How it works

The work, made checkable

  1. 01

Measuring your current AI-citation share, per engine

We run a real panel of the questions pet owners actually ask, "best emergency vet near me," "who takes walk-in cats" against ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and record exactly how often, and in what context, your practice is named.

  2. 02

Diagnosing why you are being skipped

We compare your entity data, review volume, third-party mentions and content structure against the practices these engines currently do name, including any local Mars Petcare-owned competitor, to identify the specific gaps driving the omission.

  3. 03

Locking your entity so engines can trust it

We align your name, address, phone, services and credentials across your site and every directory an engine draws on, and apply structured data that makes those facts machine-readable rather than merely present.

  4. 04

    Engineering extraction-ready content

We rebuild the pages engines pull from, service pages, FAQs, credential and staff pages, so they read as clear, citable answers to the exact questions pet owners ask, not as generic marketing copy.

  5. 05

Building the third-party corroboration engines actually cite

Since roughly 91% of AI citations come from third-party sources, we prioritize the directory, review and mention signals most likely to be read and cited, not your own website alone.

  6. 06

    Re-measuring, engine by engine

Share-of-answer is tracked against your own panel of real buyer questions over time. The engines choose what to cite, not us; the reading is reported as measured, including where it is flat.

Questions

How is this different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for a position in a list of links. This work optimizes for being named and cited inside a generated AI answer, which depends more on entity consistency, third-party corroboration and extractable content than on classic ranking position alone. A clinic can rank well and still never be the name an AI assistant says out loud.

Can you guarantee our clinic gets cited by ChatGPT?

No. AI systems choose sources dynamically and do not publish their citation logic. We measure your current share-of-answer, engineer the signals research shows these engines actually weight, and report the change as measured, including if a given engine stays flat.

Why would Banfield or VCA out-cite us if our medicine is just as good?

Because AI answers are assembled from signal volume and consistency, not a side-by-side quality review. A corporate group with more locations, more press coverage and more consistently structured data can out-signal a higher-quality independent clinic that has never had anyone maintain those signals deliberately. That is a fixable engineering gap, not a verdict on your care.

Is there a way to see how many people are searching for this on AI assistants, the way we can with Google keywords?

Not currently. Traditional keyword-volume tools track classic search volume only; AI-answer engines do not publish query volume. We anchor the work to your real search-demand data where it exists and to a direct panel of buyer questions where it does not.

The bigger picture for your practice

AI-answer visibility gets your clinic named at the exact moment a pet owner asks an assistant who to call. It does not, on its own, fix a fractured Google Business Profile or a missed-call problem, both common companions to thin AI-answer presence in this vertical.
